More about the process

CFR Studio engineers have years of professional mixing and mastering experience working on various projects and music genres of electronic dance music. We spent hundreds of hours in the studio improving our skills and developing own techniques before providing online mastering services to clients. You can be sure that your music is in good hands and we will do our best to get the needed result for you. All our clients have an option of direct communication with mastering engineer to ensure correct understanding of your requirements to achieve better output result.

We have worked on many successful recordings that had countless hours of radio play on largest radio networks such as Radio 1 (UK) and DI.FM (US), were supported by recognized DJs and featured in charts of online music stores such as iTunes and Beatport to certify our professionalism. Additionally, you can check out our work in the Samples section of CFR Studio website or by clicking HERE.

During the mastering or mixing process we use various modern tools and techniques necessary to process your audio files. We will not describe in details not to get you bored but give a short description for each tool we use and how they may affect your sound. Depending on a case we might use a set of processing tools like compressors, multi band compressors, limiters, maximizers, expanders, equalizers, stereo imaging, harmonic exciters and dither. Well, not all tools applied but only the ones which are necessary for your project so we could not “harm” your recording and be sure not to make it sound unnatural or over-processed.

If we need to adjust the dynamics of specific frequencies or separate instruments (for example, controlling bass line or de-essing vocal parts) a multi band dynamic processor may be used. While a single-band compressor simply affects the entire range of frequencies and may be applied to a well compressed mix which requires just a little processing. To shape the overall tonal balance of a mix we use linear phase equalizers to eliminate possible distortion thus receiving more transparent sound. In case your mix sounds too wide or too “thin” we might want to use stereo imaging processors to adjust the stereo image of the sound field.

After you have exported your final mix with at least 44.1 kHz / 24 bit quality send audio files to us in WAV or AIFF formats. We may work with frequencies up to 96 kHz and 32 bit resolution if necessary for your recording. But we think there is no sense of using higher than that as, for example, scientists record dolphins at 192 kHz and you are not one of them, are you? 🙂

Also, it is not recommended to use lossy audio formats such as MP3, WMA and AAC (which may also have variable bitrate) as fidelity of high frequencies is not preserved in such files thus we would not be able to guarantee high output quality for our masters. We encourage you to use uncompressed audio formats such as WAV or AIFF files. In case you might need a hint concerning file formats or audio quality export settings you may always send us a message and get a free quotation.

After you decide which type of mastering you need simply upload pre-master audio files or project stems directly to our server using convenient online upload form (to make sure your files would not be shared with any third parties while using file hosting websites) but you are free to choose your own upload option. Even if you are unsure which service type you need just let us know and we will send you recommendations concerning your project.

With free mastering sample offer our engineers will master one of your songs using standard stereo processing and send back a few minute sample for you to review. That way you will be able to hear how CFR Studio professionals may improve sound quality of your music. Though you need to understand that we cannot promise miracles as output quality of our masters directly depends on input mix quality of your recordings. That means, the better mix quality you have the better master we will have on output.

Your mastering or mixing submission files are thoroughly auditioned by a professional ear and analysed with tools like spectrum analyser, spectrogram and vector scope to ensure we notice and pay attention to all existing nuances and details of your song. Additionally, we may send you mixing review absolutely for free with our recommendations on what more needs to be done at the mixing stage to make your pre-master audio files sound better. You will receive a complete guide where to look and what tools you may use to increase sound quality of your recording.

You see, there are various mastering and mixing situations and magic combination or preset of processing tools that do it all does not exist! That means your songs, tracks and project stems are unique from the point of mastering or mixing and custom solution should be found for every recording. We always try to give our customers a hint when possible as we are musicians ourselves and understand how it is important to get professional assistance sometimes.
